Florence Airport Car Hire

Most of the driving regulations and rules are the same around Europe. However, we have listed some of the rules that you may not know about, making your drive in Italy a safe drive.

Remember to drive on the RIGHT hand side of the road! An easy way to remember this is that you (the driver) must be next to the line in the middle of the road!

Children in cars: Children and babies must always be in car safety seats when travelling in a car in Italy. Children of the age or under the age of 12 must not travel in the front of a car.

Documentation: Always carry your driving licence whilst driving your hire car. You will also need the following car documents, vehicle registration (V5) and certificate of motor insurance. If you do not have the new photo ID licence then make sure you carry with you your passport to validate the driving licence. If the vehicle is a hire car or one you are simply borrowing and is not registered in your name, carry all hire documentation with you or a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive the car.

Drinking and driving: Lower than in the UK, anything over 0.05 per cent and you could face anything up to imprisonment. Quite simply - don’t do it, catch a taxi!

Fines: On the spot fines can be issued. Make sure you get an official receipt when issued by the officer collecting the fine.

Warning triangle: Is compulsory to carry in the car, so check that your hire car has one!

Lights: Headlights must be on dipped in poor daytime visibility, and on in all tunnels at all times. They must also be on dipped when on motorways, dual carriageways, and on all out of town roads. Motorcycles must always use dipped headlights even during the day.
