Florence was originally built and named in 59 BC by Julius Caesar as Florentia (Flourishing) as a settlement for his veteran soldiers. Today however Florence is the most populated city within Tuscany and has a population of around 364,779.
Florence is a truly beautiful city that is nested in between the Senese Clavey Hills which protect it from natures elements, making it hotter in the summer than many coastal towns. Some of the hills surrounding Florence are Careggi, Settignano, Fiesole, Arcetri, Poggio, Bellosguardo and Imperiale and the city lies on the Arno river together with another three minor rivers.
